VanDusen Preserve trail has RE-OPENED!

QLC is pleased to announce that the VanDusen Preserve trail has been re-opened after the effects of Hurricane Irene were cleared!  Our thanks go out to Steve Lovering and his staff at the Town of Queensbury Parks and Recreation Department for their assistance in clearing our trail.  Also,  thanks to the couple who volunteered their time to assist with this also, unbeknownst to us.  Happy hiking!!

The VanDusen Preserve located on West Mountain Road has had to be temporarily closed to allow for cleanup of substantial damage from Tropical Storm Irene.  Please check back for updates.

New Hiking Trail Open For Use

QLC is proud to announce that our newest hiking trail is opened and ready for your enjoyment!  The Clendon Brook Preserve, generously donated by the Roland Akins family is a 1/2 mile trail located on the south side of Corinth Road, approximately 400 feet west of the VanDusen Road Intersection.  There is a parking lot accommodating four cars located at the trail head.  Our thanks go out t0 Leon Steves, QLC President and  his brothers, Victor and Stanley Steves who donated so much of their time in readying this trail for public use.  The Steves brothers also built the informational kiosk at the trailhead.

Cross Country Ski Tour

Join us for a fun, informative cross country ski tour of Rush Pond on Sunday, January 30, 2011.  The tour will be lead by QLC Director and local environmental educator, Jim Underwood.

Rush Pond is a valuable wetland located at the headwaters of Glen Lake.  It is the habitat to many native species of wildlife, vegetation and unique landforms.

We will meet in the parking lot behind Queensbury Elementary School at 12:00 noon.  Exit 19  I87- west on  Aviation Road, Queensbury.  (The Qsby.  School campus is on the right, the Elementary school is located in the rear of the campus.)

Guided Paddle – Hudson River

QLC will offer a free guided paddle trip on the Hudson River on Sunday, September 26.  All interested boaters will meet at 9:30 AM in front of Queensbury High School.  The group will then drive to the put-in in Moreau for a paddle upstream looping to the Spier Falls Dam, then downstream to the Sherman Island Dam.  Estimated time for the trip is three hours.  Enjoy a narrative of the construction of Spier Falls Dam, once the largest cut block dam in the world when completed in 1915.  Boaters should bring their own canoes or kayaks for the trip.  These paddles are always a great time, enjoyed by all who participate.Glen Lake Paddle - Fall 09

Fundraising at Cool Beans

PADDLE THE HUDSON RIVER WITH QLC

**THERE WILL BE REPRESENTATIVES FROM OUR ORGANIZATION AT THE BOAT LAUNCH AT 10:00 AM ON BOTH SATURDAY AND SUNDAY 8/7 AND 8/8 TO GUIDE A TOUR**

QLC will host a paddle on the Hudson River starting from the Queensbury Recreation launch at the end of Big Boom Road on Saturday, August 7 at 10:00AM.  We will paddle upstream to Hudson Pointe Preserve and the powerhouse at the Sherman Island Dam, with a break for lunch and a swim.

Participants are asked to bring their own canoes or kayaks and a lunch, and to arrive early to launch their boats.

SPRING PADDLE ON GLEN LAKE

After a busy Memorial Day weekend, why not take a relaxing, informative canoe/kayak tour with QLC?

Local Environmental Educator and QLC Director Jim Underwood will lead a tour of the Glen Lake Fen on Wed., June 2 beginning at 5:00pm.

The tour is free and will begin at 5pm and end at 7pm.  We will meet at the Queensbury Boat Launch on Glen Lake Road.  Please bring your own canoe or kayak.

QLC will be holding a reception and social at The West Side Grille at West Mountain Ski Area on Sunday, April 25 from 2:00-5:00.  Lunch will be served from 2:00-4:00.  Please join us for lunch and an opportunity to become acquainted with our Board of Directors, who will give a brief presentation of our organization’s efforts to conserve our environment.  Optional activities could include biking/hiking the mountain, weather permitting, and dancing on the deck.  Please check this website on the day of the event for information on activities.

The price of the lunch is $20/adults and $10/children.  If you wish to attend please send  a check or money order to QLC, 169 Haviland Road, Queensbury, NY 12804 with name and contact information including, address, telephone number/email address and how many guests will be attending.  Tickets will be mailed to you.  Any questions, contact us at 792-2006 or qlcny.1@gmail.com
